I Samuel 16:1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul ...
HOW LONG WILT THOU MOURN?
(Through many disappointments & deceit, To Zion ascend, go up to the mercy seat)
The God of my fathers has been with me
Even as death descended and separated
To the Rock I returned and drank, fully sated
Friends familiar devised and whispered
But my God suffered them not to hurt
Whether in highest heaven or deepest hell
Everlasting strength is He, God of Bethel
While an exile and stranger in this Baca land
United with Christ and His saints in pilgrim band
Though all the world may quake and be shaken
My soul will never be forgotten or forsaken
In God's inscrutable, yea, sharp providence
He never fails to set me before His face
Can He refuse the contrite and humble heart?
Will to His children not the best gifts impart?
Our Father providing happiest sustenance
Heaping blessings: glory to glory, grace for grace
In even my deepest disappointment
Christ Jesus applies the purest ointment
Soul, how long wilt thou mourn? – weep no more
Press into the tabernacle of the Lord
Take good heed, do not delay
Violently press, fix your gaze
As Christ's good soldier, you must endure hardness
Rest in His easy yoke – o, blessed harness
Laying aside all things that entangle and grieve
To Zion ascend, go up to the mercy seat
Press on, travel not by sight, but by faith
Verily, soon you shall see His lovely face
Seek Him with diligence, and He will be found
Rain will fall, His face will shine, grace will abound
Made more than a conqueror by His strength
Comprehending love's height, depth, breadth and length
Keep your hand to the plow, not one backward glance
Linger no more, seize the better inheritance
By faith God's promises fully embrace and confess
Feast, be filled and glory in Christ's unsearchable riches
Luke 9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem...
57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. 59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. 61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. 62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
I do like what is written at the beginning of Chapter 2 [of II Samuel] after David's lament in chapter 1: "After this David inquired of the Lord, 'Shall I go ....?'" As David did not remain in his lament, I cannot do so either. I cannot disregard and discard my feelings, yet I cannot disregard where God has me to go next. Like David, I need to inquire of Him to know where that place lies and to press on....to move on, like "Barnabas," the frog, "because frogs can only move forward; they can't go backward." That's what my sister would want.
Relying on His grace alone to move forward....and to ask Him, "Shall I go ....?"
Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. 15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. 16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
What tempts you to look back from the plow?
Would Jesus say you are fit for the kingdom of God?
Does your desire for Christ and the heavenly country exceed your desire for anything or anyone else?
How does you mourning hinder your looking unto Jesus and running with patience the race set before you?
What keeps you from enjoying the table the LORD has prepared for you
... in the valley of the shadow of death,
... in the presence of your enemies,
... all the days of your life?
May the Holy Spirit strengthen us to embrace God and His promises so we might not be weary or faint on our pilgrimage.
