  • In death I walked, My vision clouded

    In death I walked
    My vision clouded
    Filling with doubt
    Your face shrouded

    Nary a whisper
    The ceiling brass
    Mephitic air
    A terrible blast

    Too, too many for me
    Beyond measure pressed
    Falling down on my knees
    O, Lord, show me kindness

    What gallish affliction
    Tasting bitter, no sweet
For the sake of Your Son
    Arise, awake, send relief

    Hosanna in the highest
    Hear Your child's cries
    My prayer do not despise
    Succor me from the skies

    High priest interceding
    My soul always keeping
    For Your name's sake leading
    O'er Bether come leaping

Upon my bed, sore I wept
    Myriad temptations blew
Yet all Your promises You kept
    Fire fell, my soul renewed

    Downcast, forlorn, distressed
    Alone in the wilderness
But no! - Glory dwelt in the midst
The Word spoke, my soul refreshed

By faith seven times I went seeking
To whom else could I be appealing
But the unseen God always seeing
    The Spirit's sure seal guaranteeing

    Little cloud like a hand
First a glimpse, then a drop
    Then floods on thirsty land
    Heavens rent, springs unstopped

    Rain showers poured
    My cup overflowed
    Joy and peace restored
    Sorrow transposed

    My life and my light
    Abundant supply
    My exceeding delight
    With You I am satisfied

    Of Your pleasures deeply drinking
    To heavenly realms translated
    Into everlasting bliss sinking
    Inebriated and intoxicated

    Your face it shone
    Bright like the sun
    O, promised one
    Into Your courts I run

    Your love has captured
    How can I stay silent
    By the Beloved enraptured
    Fed with clusters from Canaan

I Kings 18:42b And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees, 43  And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. 44  And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not. 45  And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain...

Isaiah 25:4  For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall. 5  Thou shalt bring down the noise of strangers, as the heat in a dry place; even the heat with the shadow of a cloud: the branch of the terrible ones shall be brought low.

Hebrews 4:14  Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Isaiah 44:1  Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen: 2  Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen. 3  For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: 4  And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses. 5  One shall say, I am the LORD'S; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the LORD, and surname himself by the name of Israel.

John 7:37  In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38  He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39  (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Luke 11:13  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Ephesians 5:18  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.

This is good!   Especially appreciate the scripture passages to remind us where the words come from....otherwise you would be sending us scurrying to our concordances for some of these references!    Not only is there the message you have of times of refreshing, but the beauty of the poetry in God's word you have preserved.

@quest4god@revelife - Speaking of references - Grrr! I just noticed I had I Kings 8 instead of 18, so had to change that.

I was originally planning to post only the poem, but as it progressed, I began to add passages and kept adding more. One passage I did want to include was the I Kings 18 passage b/c some people might think I was into some sort of nutty numerology with the reference to seven times (in the Bible the number seven does seem to signify perfection). I do try to include relevant Scriptures in my tags, so those can be a guide to some of the Scripture references I've not included.

About that scurrying - I think doing some homework like that can be good. I've found in reading bios, memoirs, commentaries, etc., when the references or passages aren't given, my looking it up for myself often makes it stick more for me than if they had been, plus then I can go & read the context.

I am really zealous for Christians to start to understand the great privileges we have as children of God, that He wants us to know Him in deeper and higher ways ~ e.g.- end of Ephesians 3. Only as we begin to see these are real possibilities will we begin to ask Him to reveal Himself to us in such ways. We have not b/c we ask not. And we ask not b/c we are ignorant about these things.

I was pleasantly surprised as I began to write this late last night (well, early this AM) b/c I was able to express some of what had recently happened, the time of real refreshment I was privileged to enjoy. Psalm 65:4. (You can look it up. ;))
