200 years ago ... Adoniram & Ann Judson ~ Don't waste YOUR marriage
I know some of you are already married, but many of you are single and are hoping to be married one day – and once again another Valentine's Day has come and gone, and some of you are depressed and devastated that there's still no ring on your finger, or that there's no woman in your life to buy a ring for...Don't get me wrong, marriage IS a wonderful gift from God, but we always have to remember that all of God's gifts are given to God's people so we might make much of our God – or as Lecrae put it...
See your money, your singleness, marriage, talent, your time
They were loaned to you to show the world that Christ is Divine
Two hundred years ago on this day, February 19, 1812, Adoniram Judson and his wife, Ann Hasseltine Judson, set sail from Salem, Massachusetts as the first foreign missionaries sent from the United States.The following gives us a glimpse into the rugged, Christ-centered character and holy ambition of Judson, as well as the expectations he had of Ann (from "The Life of Adoniram Judson" by Edward Judson, 20-21):
Young Judson, before he had resolved to be a missionary, had made up his mind to the sufferings and privations which he well knew were in store for him. He thus wrote to Mr. Hasseltine, of Bradford, when asking for his daughter's hand:"I have now to ask whether you can consent to part with your daughter early next spring, to see her no more in this world? whether you can consent to her departure to a heathen land, and her subjection to the hardships and sufferings of a missionary life? whether you can consent to her exposure to the dangers of the ocean; to the fatal influence of the southern climate of India; to every kind of want and distress; to degradation, insult, persecution, and perhaps a violent death? Can you consent to all this, for the sake of Him who left His heavenly home and died for her and for you; for the sake of perishing, immortal souls; for the sake of Zion and the glory of God? Can you consent to all this, in hope of soon meeting your daughter in the world of glory, with a crown of righteousness brightened by the acclamations of praise which shall redound to her Saviour from heathens saved, through her means, from eternal woe and despair?"These same anticipations of missionary sorrows pervade a pathetic letter written by him to Miss Ann Hasseltine, during the period of their betrothal:
January 1, 1811. Tuesday Mom. "It is with the utmost sincerity, and with my whole heart, that I wish you, my love, a happy new year. May it be a year in which your walk will be close with God; your frame calm and serene; and the road that leads you to the Lamb marked with purer light. May it be a year in which you will have more largely the spirit of Christ, be raised above sublunary things, and be willing to be disposed of in this world just as God shall please. As every moment of the year will bring you nearer the end of your pilgrimage, may it bring you nearer to God, and find you more prepared to hail the messenger of death as a deliverer and a friend. And now, since I have begun to wish, I will go on. May this be the year in which you will change your name; in which you will take a final leave of your relatives and native land; in which you will cross the wide ocean, and dwell on the other side of the world, among a heathen people. What a great change will this year probably effect in our lives! How very different will be our situation and employment! If our lives are preserved and our attempt prospered, we shall next new year's day be in India, and perhaps wish each other a happy new year in the uncouth dialect of Hindostan or Burmah. We shall no more see our kind friends around us, or enjoy the conveniences of civilized life, or go to the house of God with those that keep holy day; but swarthy countenances will everywhere meet our eye, the jargon of an unknown tongue will assail our ears, and we shall witness the assembling of the heathen to celebrate the worship of idol gods. We shall be weary of the world, and wish for wings like a dove, that we may fly away and be at rest. We shall probably experience seasons when we shall be 'exceeding sorrowful, even unto death.' We shall see many dreary, disconsolate hours, and feel a sinking of spirits, anguish of mind, of which now we can form little conception. O, we shall wish to lie down and die. And that time may soon come. One of us may be unable to sustain the heat of the climate and the change of habits; and the other may say, with literal truth, over the grave—"'By foreign hands thy dying eyes were closed;
By foreign hands thy decent limbs composed;
By foreign hands thy humble grave adorned;'"but whether we shall be honored and mourned by strangers, God only knows. At least, either of us will be certain of one mourner. In view of such scenes shall we not pray with earnestness, 'O for an overcoming faith,' etc.?"
Lecrae's "Don't Waste Your Life"
(ft. Dwayne Tryumf & Cam)
(verse 2)
Armed and dangerous
So the devil just can't hang with us
Christian youth, them a stand with us
Living and driven,
Given a vision,
Fulfilling the commission He handed us
London to Los Angeles,
The rap evangelist
My Daddy wouldn't abandon us
"I gotta backpack full of tracts, plus I keep a Johnny Mac"
So, are you ready to jam with us?
So let's go, gimme the word and let's go
Persecution?
Let's go
Tribulation?
Let's go
Across the nation
Let's go
Procrastination?
Let's go
Hung on the cross in the cold
Died for the young and the old
Can't say you never know
Heaven knows
How many souls are going to hell or to heaven
so we gotta go in and get emDon't wanna waste my life, life, life...
Don't wanna waste my life, life, life...
Don't wanna waste my...
Don't wanna waste my...
Don't wanna waste my...(verse 3)
Suffer
Yeah do it for Christ
You trying to figure what to do with your life
You make a lot of money, hope you doing it right
because the money is God's, you better steward it right
Stay focused! You ain't got no ride?
Your life ain't wrapped up in what you drive,
the clothes you wear, the job you work,
the color your skin – naw you Christian first.
People living life for a job,
Make a lil money, start living for a car,
get em a house, a wife, kids, and a dog
When they retire, they living high on the hog –
but guess what? – they didn't ever really live at all:
To live is Christ and that's Paul I recall,
To die is gain, so for Christ we give it all!
He's the treasure you can never find in a mall!
See your money, your singleness, marriage, talent, your time
They were loaned to you to show the world that Christ is Divine
That's why it's Christ in my rhymes,
That's why it's Christ all the time.
See my whole world is built around Him,
He's the life in my lines
I refuse to waste my life
He's too true ta chase that ice
Here's my gifts and time cause I'm constantly trying to be used to praise the Christ
If He's truly raised to life,
then this news should change your life
And by His grace you can put your faith in the place that rules your days and nights.Don't wanna waste my life, life, life...
Don't wanna waste my life, life, life...
Don't wanna waste my...
Don't wanna waste my...
Don't wanna waste my...Luke 12:15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”May God give us grace so we don't waste our lives...
but that we spend our lives and be spent for the Lord Jesus Christ like Adoniram & Ann Judson...if single, that we don't waste our singleness,
if married, that we don't waste our marriages.May God's Spirit work in us to make us willing to bow to His will for us
for the sake of Him who left His heavenly home and died for us;
for the sake of perishing, immortal souls;
for the sake of Zion and the glory of God.That we might say with the apostle Paul:
"For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain."
(Philippians 1:21)
and with John Eliot:"Prayers and pains through faith in Christ will do anything."

Wow!! What a "may I marry your daughter" letter? He was definitely honest. Also, the love letter..wow!! I was always impressed with the work they did, the sacrifices they made and the willingness to follow Father no matter what. It is what He requires of us--surrendering to Him and trusting Him to carry us through.
Good Evening from Starbucks after dark. I saw you listed as having posted. Since I was alone, at Starbucks, relaxed and emotionally stable, I read your fine post. lol I am so weak with reading the deeper subjects about the Christian life.
I guess many of our old Missionaries were exceptional in their devotion to Christ. I like Hudson Taylor and some orphan director in England. They really believed in prayer. If they saw my prayer journal, they would question my salvation.
It is true--we get hung up on issues with planet earth. Somewhere in the mix, I try to do what God wants--on the tough issues--taking care of aging parents, being faithful in marriage, not filing out dishonest tax returns, etc. but, as you know, I have my weaknesses. I went to church today and the pastor used the term, 'Christian Atheist.' He said those are church members who say they 'believe,' but do not follow Jesus Christ. I am being shot at from all sides.
This was an excellent post Karen. I read it and it made me think. I will now finish sipping my coffee at Starbucks and hope my wife doesn't catch me out after dark.

Not to elevate our ancestors above that which we ought, but I wonder...is there a young woman alive today whose love for Jesus is so fervent as to say yes to this young man proposing such an arduous and dangerous life - with virtually no turning back?
Or for that matter, a young man daring to propose such a life for himself and the one he loves?
@stephensmustang - Indeed! Those were both quite the letters. I'm hoping to post some things from her journals as well.
"It is what He requires of us--surrendering to Him and trusting Him to carry us through." - Amen! God works in us to will & to do of His good pleasure! Impossible with us, but possible with Him!
@ANVRSADDAY - Frank, we all have those daily responsibilities for which we will be held accountable (and Jesus said if we're faithful in the small things, we will be given more to steward) – but we need to be on guard that the cares, riches & pleasures of this life don't end up choking out the word of God bearing fruit in our lives. We need to keep in the Bible and prayer so our eternal perspective might be renewed, which also includes a global perspective – a desire that the Gospel goes out to all the nations. I've also found that reading Christian biography is a great tonic to lukewarmness, or that fleshly tendency toward Christian atheism.
@quest4god@revelife - If there isn't a young woman and a young man like Ann & Adoniram, then we're in a very, very sad state indeed. I'm praying for God to raise up such laborers to go out into the harvest (that zeal for missions goes hand-in-hand with revival), as well as praying that God would make me willing to be and to do whatever He wants, wherever He wants, and He would continue to supply and refresh me w/ Habakkuk 3 joy in those times when there's no fruit on the vines...
@naphtali_deer - I'm sorry. I didn't mean it so seriously. Of course there are still people going to the mission field! I only meant that laying it all on the line is a courageous thing for a young man to do when he so desperately wants a "Yes!" I think if it had been me, I'd have made sure of her love for God and all that before I asked her to marry me!
We must not give in to despair that revival isn't forthcoming. We have to pray for it, believing!
@quest4god@revelife - Yes, people are going, but do they really have anything close to this level of passion, zeal and commitment?
There are times there will be no fruit, that's the reality of it, but my prayer earlier this evening went beyond "as my days, so shall my strength be" to "as my days so shall my JOY be!" God's Spirit blows as He wills. We've seen people work tirelessly for years without revival, but the secret to joyful endurance (Col. 1) and to having those deer feet and treading on our high places is our persistent asking, seeking and knocking for God to rain down His sovereign showers of True Bread and Living Water to satisfy our hunger and thirst!
Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven,
Feed me till I want no more;
Feed me till I want no more.
@naphtali_deer - This has proved to be the ground for serious soul-searching for both of us - and maybe many more! I have seen missionaries go forth from my church - even last year a young family left for China. Unfortunately, they have had to return to the US because it turns out he has cancer and is awaiting surgery in Seattle. They are a wonderful family, unlike any I've seen yet so it's difficult to understand this interruption in their commitment overseas.
Many families in my neighborhood and surrounding area are missionaries or have family members on foreign soil. It's not for me to judge their level of commitment or their zeal, but I certainly hope they have given all because there is no point in suffering all of that if the heart is not ablaze for the Lord and for those whom He will call.
I am being renewed in my prayers for those serving the Lord in other places - for their safety, their joy, and the leading of the Holy Spirit in carrying the gospel there. We have only the faintest notion of conditions for the natives and missionaries. There is more hostility in most countries than there is in the US.
(Pete's wife has recovered enough to return home, and their daughter has taken a short leave from her work in Kenya to be with her mom.)
@quest4god@revelife - Re: the family who had to return to the U.S. - there are NO accidents in God's plan... Psalms 115:3: Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.
I was only going to include a couple verses, but I really need to include them all!
Lord, We Know That Thou Art Near Us
(Lyrics by Jane Crewdson)
Lord, we know that Thou art near us,
Though Thou seem’st to hide Thy face;
And are sure that Thou dost hear us,
Though no answer we embrace.
Not one promise shall miscarry
Not one blessing come too late
Though the vision long may tarry
Give us patience, Lord to wait.
While withholding—Thou art giving
In Thine own appointed way
And while waiting we’re receiving
Blessings suited to our day.
O the wondrous loving-kindness
Planning, working out of sight,
Bearing with us in our blindness,
Out of darkness bringing light.
Weaving blessings out of trials,
Out of grief evolving bliss;
Answering prayer by wise denials
When Thy children ask amiss.
And when faith shall end in vision,
And when prayer is lost in praise,
Then shall love, in full fruition,
Justify Thy secret ways.
You're correct that we have only the faintest notion of the conditions in other countries. Though outward hostility is worse in many, many ways, yet lukewarmness and apathy is just as deadly and can be equally stressful to the soul, if not more so. No matter what, we need to continue to go to the God of all comfort for sustaining and satisfying grace to carry us through.
(Thanks for the update on Pete's wife.)
This one seems to say what you were saying. Jesus I am trusting...
Weaving blessings out of trials,
Out of grief evolving bliss;
Answering prayer by wise denials
When Thy children ask amiss
All of it reminds us that God is in control and He is love.
@quest4god@revelife - Amen. (That's one of my favorite hymns. I don't think it's very well known, but we sang it fairly often at our last church.)
