  • "My shepherd will supply my need" (Psalm 23 by Isaac Watts)

    PSALM 23.
    God our Shepherd.
    (Isaac Watts, 1719)

    My Shepherd will supply my need,
    Jehovah is his name;
    In pastures fresh he makes me feed,
    Beside the living stream.

    He brings my wand'ring spirit back
    When I forsake his ways;
    And leads me, for his mercy's sake,
    In paths of truth and grace.

    When I walk through the shades of death,
    Thy presence is my stay;
    A word of thy supporting breath
    Drives all my fears away.

    Thy hand, in sight of all my foes,
    Doth still my table spread,
    My cup with blessings overflows,
    Thine oil anoints my head.

    The sure provisions of my God
    Attend me all my days:
    O may thy house be mine abode,
    And all my work be praise!

    There would I find a settled rest,
    While others go and come;
    No more a stranger or a guest,
    But like a child at home.

  • He will supply my need. That's a promise!

  • Beautiful!  Mr. Watts sets the mood so well...I almost feel the Shepherd looking after me.

    Is this your church?

  • @cerwindoris - Amen, sister! And we KNOW all God's promises are yes and Amen in Jesus!

    @quest4god@revelife - I have come to LOVE Isaac Watts' hymns. He had such a God-given gift. His "Psalms & Hymns" was one of the books I picked up at the Gospel Coalition Conference last year.

    I've been wanting to post this psalm for a while now. Over the weekend God brought those first words to mind: "My Shepherd will supply my need, Jehovah is his name." I couldn't remember any more of it than that, but that was so comforting. :)

    No, this isn't our home church; this recording is from a church in Texas. (I originally hadn't included the video when I originally posted this psalm, but then wanted to do so. Even though the written text itself is so wonderful, I really like this tune a lot.)

Thank God. He can make men and women in middle life sing again with a joy that has been chastened by a memory of their past failures. ~ Alan Redpath
