  • April Fool's Day: Have you become like the foolish Galatians?

O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Galatians 3:1-3.

From Martin Luther's Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians:

    Verse 1. O foolish Galatians.

The Apostle Paul manifests his apostolic care for the Galatians. Sometimes he entreats them, then again he reproaches them, in accordance with his own advice to Timothy: “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort.”

In the midst of his discourse on Christian righteousness Paul breaks off, and turns to address the Galatians. “O foolish Galatians,” he cries. “I have brought you the true Gospel, and you received it with eagerness and gratitude. Now all of a sudden you drop the Gospel. What has got into you?”

Paul reproves the Galatians rather sharply when he calls them “fools, bewitched, and disobedient.” Whether he is indignant or sorry, I cannot say. He may be both. It is the duty of a Christian pastor to reprove the people committed to his charge. Of course, his anger must not flow from malice, but from affection and a real zeal for Christ.

There is no question that Paul is disappointed. It hurts him to think that his Galatians showed so little stability. We can hear him say: “I am sorry to hear of your troubles, and disappointed in you for the disgraceful part you played.” I say rather much on this point to save Paul from the charge that he railed upon the churches, contrary to the spirit of the Gospel.

A certain distance and coolness can be noted in the title with which the Apostle addresses the Galatians. He does not now address them as his brethren, as he usually does. He addresses them as Galatians in order to remind them of their national trait to be foolish.

We have here an example of bad traits that often cling to individual Christians and entire congregations. Grace does not suddenly transform a Christian into a new and perfect creature. Dregs of the old and natural corruption remain. The Spirit of God cannot at once overcome human deficiency. Sanctification takes time.

Although the Galatians had been enlightened by the Holy Spirit through the preaching of faith, something of their national trait of foolishness plus their original depravity clung to them. Let no man think that once he has received faith, he can presently be converted into a faultless creature. The leavings of old vices will stick to him, be he ever so good a Christian.

Verse 1. Who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth?

Paul calls the Galatians foolish and bewitched. In the fifth chapter he mentions sorcery among the works of the flesh, declaring that witchcraft and sorcery are real manifestations and legitimate activities of the devil. We are all exposed to the influence of the devil, because he is the prince and god of the world in which we live.

Satan is clever. He does not only bewitch men in a crude manner, but also in a more artful fashion. He bedevils the minds of men with hideous fallacies. Not only is he able to deceive the self-assured, but even those who profess the true Christian faith. There is not one among us who is not at times seduced by Satan into false beliefs.

This accounts for the many new battles we have to wage nowadays. But the attacks of the old Serpent are not without profit to us, for they confirm our doctrine and strengthen our faith in Christ. Many a time we were wrestled down in these conflicts with Satan, but Christ has always triumphed and always will triumph. Do not think that the Galatians were the only ones to be bewitched by the devil. Let us realize that we too may be seduced by Satan.

Verse 1. Who hath bewitched you?

. . . Since the devil has this uncanny ability to make us believe a lie until we would swear a thousand times it were the truth, we must not be proud, but walk in fear and humility, and call upon the Lord Jesus to save us from temptation.

Although I am a doctor of divinity, and have preached Christ and fought His battles for a long time, I know from personal experience how difficult it is to hold fast to the truth. I cannot always shake off Satan. I cannot always apprehend Christ as the Scriptures portray Him. Sometimes the devil distorts Christ to my vision. But thanks be to God, who keeps us in His Word, in faith, and in prayer.

The spiritual witchery of the devil creates in the heart a wrong idea of Christ. Those who share the opinion that a person is justified by the works of the Law, are simply bewitched. Their belief goes against faith and Christ.

Are you foolish like the Galatians?

    Have you been bewitched?

    Have you dropped the Gospel?

Are you obeying the truth or believing a lie?

Are you trusting in Christ to justify you or your works?

Having begun in the Spirit are you now trying to finish in the flesh?

May our Good Shepherd guard and protect His flock from the error of the Galatians and keep His sheep firmly rooted and grounded in the rock of His pure Gospel of grace:

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

    -Ephesians 2:8-9

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

    -Romans 1:16-17

May God give us shepherds like Paul, men and women who are constrained by the love of Christ, zealous for the simple Gospel of Jesus Christ and are jealous for their flocks; pastors who continue to keep watch and contend for the truth, guard the Gospel and their flocks, and love and exhort their sheep to beware of wolves.

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:6-9.

Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my folly: and indeed bear with me. 2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. II Corinthians 11:1-4.

Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons, 19 Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: 20 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, 21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. 22 And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: 23 Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. 24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. 25 And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more. 26 Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. 27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. 31 Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. Acts 20:18-31.

Guard Your flock, great Shepherd of the sheep!
Keep us from becoming foolish like the Galatians!

Jesus Christ, You are the truth,
    sanctify us in the truth.

    Your word is truth.

    Holy Spirit, Spirit of truth,
    guide us into all truth.

Our Father which art in heaven
    hallowed be thy name.

    Deliver us from evil.

And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. I John 5:20-21.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. I Peter 1:3-5.

  • i have been bewitched many a time, let me tell you. satan doesn't fight fair or care how vulnerable you are either. but this right here....this word and the truth gives hope. b/c it's not about how weak i am, but how strong Jesus Christ is. amen! =)

  • Maybe you are like me in that you wish that God would hurry up and finish the work He has begun in you.  I get impatient with myself quite often ( and disappointed ).  It is not that the Holy Spirit cannot eradicate all our human failings and fallacies immediately after our new birth, but He has designed us in such a way that it is better for us to see Him working in our lives so that we know where the change really comes from.  Because any accomplishment that is of our own doing will always fail at some point.

  • @YouTOme -
Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
    Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.

    AMEN!

  • =) how did it go today at the funeral?

  • @quest4god@revelife - I have definitely had much frustration and many struggles over my sin/failings but God has really been helping me with that. His Spirit has been working in me a greater sense of assurance, forgiveness & freedom from guilt. Praise Him for that!

At the current time what I am impatient and anxious about is to see God's plan come to full fruition, since He's been giving me little tastes of what He has in store (this is related to what I blogged about on Sunday).

Our sanctification is complete (Rom. 8:29-30; I Cor. 1:30) yet ongoing (Phil. 1:6). Part of the walk of faith is our trusting that God will complete the work He's begun in us and help us walk in the works He's ordained for us.

Because any accomplishment that is of our own doing will always fail at some point.

Yes, exactly. If it's not of Him, it won't bear lasting fruit, doesn't bring Him glory and will only be burned up in the end.

Any time we get a greater sense of God's glory and His love constraining us, the glorious sovereign and free grace poured out for us through the cross of Christ, then we gain a greater vision/sense of the work God wants to do in and through us, an increasing desire to be holy to the Lord and to seek first His Kingdom, etc., it is then there come greater temptations. One of those is that we are tempted to begin try to make that happen in our own strength (again that's what I wrote on on Sunday). That's what was happening w/ Jesus in the wilderness...Satan doesn't waste his time throwing water on people who are lukewarm or cold for Jesus...only those who are hot.

  • @YouTOme - Thanks for asking. Not too many words spoken today, but I felt God helped me to be an encouragement/comfort to those who were there. Lots of hugs. And there were two unexpected blessings for me. 1-A friend showed up whom I hadn't seen for a while (she didn't even know the gal who'd died) and was a comfort to me! 2-I got a chance to visit w/ someone I'd not seen in several years.

The whole thing was hard but not as bad as I thought it would be. It didn't really all begin to hit me 'til I ended up driving past the street I'd have normally turned down to go to her house...So after that I had to take a drive for a while and then went walking in one of my favorite parks. After that I picked up pizza for dinner. I really appreciate your asking and your prayers.

  • @naphtali_deer - Somehow I must have been out of the loop regarding your friend.  I am sorry for your loss.  Knowing what little I know about you, I can believe that your perspective  remains the same - even in these times of testing of your faith.  Our God is always ....our Friend.

  • @naphtali_deer - well, i'm glad that you were able to find some comfort in the middle of all that. i'm sure, like you said, it will be hard to revisit places where you shared special times with her.  you're welcome. i know you'd do the same =)

  • @quest4god@revelife - Thank you. I did a couple posts about it last week...God has been truly amazing through it all (when isn't He?!).

Our God is always ....our Friend. Yes! A wonderful reminder.

"Bane and blessing / pain and pleasure / by the cross are sanctified..."

  • @YouTOme - Yes, and it was a much-needed reminder to me that we must allow others to serve us, comfort us, minister to us, let them wash our feet, or else we have no part with Christ. So often I want to serve, as well I must, but I also must allow others to serve me.
