  • Books, Books, Books: 850 Books for Biblical Expositors

For all who are interested, The Master's Seminary has complied a list of 850 Books for Biblical Expositors.
    (HT: http://pastorandpeople.wordpress.com/2008/05/12/850-books-for-biblical-expositors/)

Not that I am very widely read, but I'll put my two cents in here...

I was glad to see several of Martyn Lloyd-Jones' books on the list, but his commentary on First John, "Life in Christ," was mysteriously absent. It's a book I would definitely include. Also his "Studies in the Sermon on the Mount" (just finished with that one).

I would add some commentaries by Dale Ralph Davis. His writing style is quite engaging.

Having read/listened to quite a bit of Alan Redpath, I would include some books by Redpath. Though his style is not heavy-duty exposition, Redpath always gets to the crux of the matter and continually challenges his readers/listeners, something which is essential. I would also find a place for some Andrew Murray.

I've heard that John Owen's seven volume set on the book of Hebrews is a must have/must read, although I've not (yet) had opportunity to read any of it.

What books might you have included that aren't on the TMS list?

About me...

Christian hedonist in training. Pressing on to know more and more of the joy of the LORD. Pleading with God to rend the heavens and revive and refresh my own soul, as well as His Church, to His praise, honor and glory.

Thank God. He can make men and women in middle life sing again with a joy that has been chastened by a memory of their past failures. ~ Alan Redpath
