what's your price? (Bible reading - Matthew 26:14-16)

Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, What will you give me if I deliver him over to you? And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.
–Matthew 26:14-16

"Judas Betrays Christ" by Duccio di Buoninsegna

What have I been willing to receive in exchange for Christ?
What are my thirty pieces of silver?
How have I betrayed Christ?
What's my price?

What have you been willing to receive in exchange for Christ?
What are your thirty pieces of silver?
How have you betrayed Christ?
What's your price?

your spouse
your children
your parents
your relatives
a good friend
your boyfriend or girlfriend
your career
your prestige
your position
your reputation
the praise of men
power
your money
your possessions
your comfort
your convenience
your retirement account

In his book "Magnificent Obsession," John White [1] wrote this about heavenly treasure:

There is a magnificent insanity about the parable in Matthew 13:45. It has to do with a pearl freak–a merchant whose hobby was pearls. Evidently, one day he came across a pearl to end all pearls. Imagine him with staring eyes, quickly taking in his breath, licking his dry lips, then anxiously inquiring about price, haggling and pondering the tremendous cost of the pearl. You can also imagine him returning home and looking over the rest of his pearl collection. With shaking hands he would pick them up one by one and drop them into a soft leather pouch. Not only pearls, but house, slaves and everything would go so that the one pearl might become his...

The way of the cross is a magnificent obsession with a heavenly pearl, beside which everything else in life has no value. If it were a case of buying it, we would gladly sell all we had to do so.

But we cannot buy heavenly treasure. It is not for sale. The point of the parable is that having caught a glimpse of the pearl, we count all else of no value and pursue the treasure.

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up.
Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls,
who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
Matthew 13:44-46

If you had the chance to have a pearl or a 25 cent trinket from a gumball machine, which would you choose?

Have you caught a glimpse of that Pearl?
Have you caught a glimpse of the heavenly Treasure?
Would you trade the heavenly Treasure for thirty pieces of silver?

Would you trade the perishable crown for the imperishable?

And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
I Peter 5:4

Would you trade fleeting earthly pleasures for everlasting heavenly pleasures?

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,
20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21

You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 16:11

Would you be willing to exchange one day in His house for a thousand elsewhere?

How lovely is your dwelling place,
O LORD of hosts!
2 My soul longs, yes, faints
for the courts of the LORD;
my heart and flesh sing for joy
to the living God.
...
10 For a day in your courts is better
than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
the LORD bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
12 O LORD of hosts,
blessed is the one who trusts in you!

What or who do you truly treasure?
What's your price?
What are your thirty pieces of silver?

Do you truly treasure Him?
Have you seen His glory and His all-surpassing worth?

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
–Philippians 3:8-11

Lord Jesus, earthly treasures continue to lure and entice us.

They shine.
They sparkle.
They glimmer.
They gleam.
They call to us.
They make promises to us.

But not one of them compares to You.

Lord Jesus, our flesh is weak.
We come to You boldly in our time of need.
We praise You that You are a high priest who sympathizes with our weaknesses.
You were tempted as we were and yet without sin.

We confess we lust after these earthly treasures in our hearts.
Forgive us for treasuring these things above You.
Our flesh lusts against the Spirit, yes,
but yet Your Spirit lusts against our flesh.

You have put into us a new heart so we might treasure You alone.
Holy Spirit, work in us so we might not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.
Strengthen us to battle the flesh and mortify sin so sin might not have dominion over us.
Strengthen us so we might treasure the Lord Jesus alone and never consider selling out.

Holy God, be gracious to us.
Restore to us a vision of Your glory once more.
When we see Your glory aright we will see earthly treasures aright.
When we see Your glory aright we could never sell out for thirty pieces of silver.

May we count everything as loss for the surpassing worth of knowing You.
God forbid we exchange You and Your glory for thirty pieces of silver.
Keep our hearts and minds fixed on You – for You alone are the only true Treasure.
May we make You our only true Treasure and never settle for lesser "treasures."

Thank Your for treasuring us so much that You died for us.

Good Afternoon Karen,

Since I provide buffalo wings for the gals and chocolate cake, I took another read of this post. lol Thanks Karen.

I was first of all thinking about the comparison of Judas sell out with the list of potential sellout items and people you listed. I really do know what you mean despite what I will write. lol ( I am an old retired bottom line businessman)

My spouse. The Bible says that I am to love my wife as much as Chris loved the church for whom Christ died. How can I treat my wife too good and then have it become a sellout of my faith? Many wives would love to know that they can trust their husbands.

25% of all women in America will be raped at least once. It is hard for me to see selling out Christ to protect my children.

Some of the other items seem to refer to the activities of the unregenerate sinner, though we both know that some churchgoers sure have a shaky record as to many notorious sins. I guess that would be a sellout.

I will skip the very personal intimate pleasure.

I don't think most of us sell out in a big dramatic moment. I think it is a gradual losing of our first love for Christ.

It is sad the Jesus is just not the hottest topic in churches and our lives. You are sure right there. The worst words I hear have been around since about 400 a.d. (?) lol 'Let's go to church.' I hate that. Church as become a place to go--so now, the churches with the 'hottest music' and services is well attended. I love going to my 'Happy Church.' Great music and message (most of the time) I love the music. I quit for a few months when the pastor decided to speak about homosexuality and had one of the girls in church sing a lesbian song--"I kissed her and I think I liked it." I was crushed. How could a pastor take a young pure church girl and make her sing that song. Well, I am back, but I am now cautious. Should I go to the Happy church or my old boring church. No use discussing it. I am stuck in the old church. Oh my attitude needs a major overhaul. I need to be put on the rack and get serviced by the Holy Spirit.

I have good news. My wife may be back tomorrow and I won't have time to write all this stuff. lol

Blessings to you today, Karen

@FRANK@revelife - Buffalo wings & chocolate cake. Mmmm.

Frank, I do think the marriage relationship is difficult b/c we are called to love our spouses, yet we can't ever put them ahead of God. Keith Green sang a song "Pledge My Head to Heaven for the Gospel." Here's one of the verses:

Well I pledge my wife to heaven, for the Gospel,
Though our love each passing day just seems to grow.
As I told her when we wed, I'd surely rather be found dead,
Than to love her more than the one who saved my soul.

I heard that song when I was first saved/married and I didn't get it. It really took me over 20 years until I finally did...I love my husband, yes, but I love God more.

Your comments about church are so good. We don't go to church, we go to meet God! We've lost the sense of that for sure as well as the sense of His holiness. I will be praying for you to have clear direction in where God would have you be.

You wrote:

Hear you. God did this to me again today. Gut-wrenching, yes, but so purifying and freeing!

I'm so happy Norma will be home soon, but not b/c you won't be commenting so much. Have fun getting the bed made, etc., etc.

Blessings in Him to you tonight,
Karen

Welcome to Naphtali Journal.

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:

Redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ by the sovereign free grace of the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, blogging to the glory of God through the power of the Holy Spirit, all for your upbuilding, dearly beloved brothers and sisters in Christ. I love God and I have a passion for His Church to be revived again, so my prayer is that He would rend the heavens and come down and breathe life into the dry bones, including my own.

If you do not know God through His Son Jesus Christ, I pray God might use my words here to draw you to know Him and Jesus Christ whom He sent. God offers His free gift of everlasting life to all who will receive it. I am praying He might cause you to seek Him and receive His gift of repentance and remission of sins by believing in His Son the Lord Jesus Christ.
