How do you feel about the Gospel today? (ML-J)

  From Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones:

I am in my thirtieth year in this pulpit, and I am beginning to feel that I am only just beginning to understand this Gospel. It is much more thrilling to me tonight than it was in 1983. Oh, how great it is, and how short time is! There is not time enough to tell you about all the glories of this Gospel as expounded in the epistles of the apostle Paul—the breadth, and length, and depth, and height . . . the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge" (Eph. 3:18-10). Here is is. As I look at is, I am more and more amazed.

–"Compelling Christianity," (Wheaton: Crossway, 2007), 45.

Are you only beginning to feel that you are only beginning to understand the Gospel?

Is the Gospel more thrilling to you today than it ever was?

As you look at the Gospel are you more and more amazed?

Or are you continuing to get excited about a dead fish and a car wreck?

The gospel thrills me beyond any words to express how I feel.  In this song, especially verse two, the things that thrill me so...

Who can cheer the heart like Jesus
By His presence all divine
True and tender, pure and precious
O, how blest to call Him mine

Chorus
All that thrills my soul is Jesus
He is more than life to me
And the fairest of ten thousand
In my blessed Lord I see

Love of Christ so freely given
Grace of God beyond degree
Mercy higher than the heavens
Deeper than the deepest sea

What a wonderful redemption
Never can a mortal know
How my sin, though red like crimson
Can be whiter than the snow

Every need His hand supplying
Every good in Him I see
On His strength divine relying
He is all in all to me

By the crystal flowing river
With the ransomed I will sing
And forever and forever
Praise and glorify the King

 All That Thrills My Soul

Lyrics and Composer Thoro Harris, 1931

@quest4god@revelife - Norm, I'd not heard that hymn for a really long time. It is wonderful. Thank you for sharing it here.

I am loving verse 4 right now b/c this is what God is pushing me to do, to experience what Paul wrote in Gal. 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. That He might truly be all in all to me.

Every need His hand supplying
Every good in Him I see
On His strength divine relying
He is all in all to me

I just had Preaching and Preachers in my hand the other day rearranging my bookshelf. What a challenging man of God.It is as if I didnt even have a clue years back and in fact the depth of the relationship changes so at times I can't even fathom the changes, but then again can look back and see how many points were for such a time and were stages and developmental. What amazes me also is in the growth where we begin to understand how much it is not about us and the subject in the subjective aspect is others and with that comes a humbling when we realize who we are without Christ, without His covenant, and without His justification.......and gives us a appreciation for being congnizant of who we are to be in the Kingdom, and to find our Kingdom purpose and to fulfill our part in the body of Christ.

I am so encouraged  at this point.A spark has been lit among the current generation who are hungry for the Word and the real thing, not a slogan or a tshirt. They are hungering and thirsting after that life changing power and renewal by the Spirit of God. Perhaps it is time to turn some of the youngbloods on to some MLJ.

On another note :I heard this new young singer whose voice just cuts through me. Perhaps it will bless you also:

@ProvokingThought - I bought "Preaching and Preachers" for my oldest son land have wanted to read it, but haven't yet. Some of what's in that book I think is in "The Sacred Anointing: the Preaching of Martyn Lloyd-Jones," which I have read. That is simply a wonderful book, one I think I need to pick up again and I would recommend to anyone in any type of ministry for it speaks of the need for the Holy Spirit's anointing, the unction. You don't hear that taught in very many places.

I didn't have a clue until a few years ago, and yet, in many ways, I know I really don't have a clue now, but now my eyes are opened in a way they've not been previously and I'm hungering and thirsting more and more today than ever. When you speak of this generation, I presume you mean 20's-30's. I'm 50 now and I am seeing people in my generation coming alive as well. It's not limited to any age group at all. God is breaking through all over, it's not yet widespread but it's happening. The spark is definitely there, as you say.

Apart from reading the Bible, the first resource I would recommend anyone read or listen to is ML-J's sermons/messages (and you must listen to him if you've never done so, weekly messages available here). His ministry is really what the Spirit used to light the spark in me and open my eyes. I can't imagine having gone on as I was. I'd been saved for over 20 years but was blind in so many ways.

We are nothing apart from HIM! We can do nothing apart from HIM!

Amen, brother! May He rend the heavens and come down!

We share many similarities including age. I am a theological mutt though. I have served in the OPC, a Reformed Baptist and a non-denominational church. I was a preachers son whose dad died when I was ten while serving two churches. Sleep calls ..

@ProvokingThought - Praise God for indeed He is raising up watchmen on the walls. My heart is leaping for joy right now! He has not forgotten us or forsaken His flock. May He keep us faithfully laboring for His glory. Be blessed in the Lord Jesus and be strengthened by the power of His Holy Spirit this day, brother.

I am so encouraged by this posting and the comments from you all! I believe with all my heart that this time we are in NOW, is the time where we will see things happening in the churches throughout the Nation that we have never seen before. An awakening to God's Holy Spirit. A realization that God is not a person "up there"; but a Creator God Who cared so much for His own creation that He sent His Own Son to allow us the privilege of eternal life with Him; and even more important: that He dwells within each of us who respond to Him for a purpose. That purpose is whatever He directs individually for us, but we are still to find that purpose and be Obedient to Him.

@Biblerapture - Jim, yes, I wholeheartedly say "Amen" to all you've written here. My heart is still dancing and singing at the work I can see He has been doing and will do, yet I have been simultaneously grieving at the current state of things, pretty much the same way you put here: even more important: that He dwells within each of us who respond to Him for a purpose. That purpose is whatever He directs individually for us, but we are still to find that purpose and be Obedient to Him. I have been pondering and praying over this now for most of the morning. God has called and equipped each one of us to be His holy priesthood to build up the Body of Christ to His glory. Would that each of one His children would recognize that and embrace that calling and walk w/ Him in the power He provides.

I'd have to saythat the Word of God is more thrilling to me today than ever before. Is that age/maturity? is it connected with prayers for the desire to hunger and thirst after Him?   Is it a revival?

@nicolevw - Nicole, I can't say for sure in your case, but pray to God He would continue to grow your love for Him, His Word and His Gospel more and more!

I know when I pray out of a sincere heart (and by that I mean, in contrast to a rote prayer) for a greater hunger and thirst, He does answer. And usually it has been very disconcerting, He shakes me up because in order for Him to grow a greater hunger and thirst in us He has to show us our current idols, the things we hunger and thirst after in place of Him, and He has to humble us and bring us down to our knees to show us how absolutely glorious He is! He is more thrilling to me today than ever! I can't ever imagine going to back to anything less; that frightens me!

Welcome to Naphtali Journal.

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:
The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

Redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ by the sovereign free grace of the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, blogging to the glory of God through the power of the Holy Spirit, all for your upbuilding, dearly beloved brothers and sisters in Christ. I love God and I have a passion for His Church to be revived again, so my prayer is that He would rend the heavens and come down and breathe life into the dry bones, including my own.

If you do not know God through His Son Jesus Christ, I pray God might use my words here to draw you to know Him and Jesus Christ whom He sent. God offers His free gift of everlasting life to all who will receive it. I am praying He might cause you to seek Him and receive His gift of repentance and remission of sins by believing in His Son the Lord Jesus Christ.

Please feel free to explore here, and as you read, if you have any questions, please message me.
